Noted Local Historian Bro John Gaule has died.

The noted local historian Brother John Gaule has passed away. Bro John died on Wednesday last and was interred on Saturday at Castletown. He was a recognised authority on the ‘Battle of Carrickshock’ which took place in 1831 as a consequence of the unfair Tithe system employed by the government of the day. Carrickshock (carriag-seabhac, ‘the hawk’s rock’) is a small townland in the civil parish of Aghaviller. The GAA club was named in its honour when the teams in Hugginstown and Knockmoylan amalgamated in 1928 to commemorate its memory. They went on to great success playing in 19 senior county hurling finals between 1929 and 1951 winning seven county titles including a record four in-a-row. This year is the 90th Anniversary of its foundation.
