Stoneyford Active Retirement Group visit the Áras an Uachtaráin 11 Márta 2016

Áras 2016

Stoneyford Active Retirement Group received an invitation to Afternoon Tea at Áras an Uachtaráin recently. The names of ten members were drawn from a hat and travelled by train to Heuston Station, then got taxis to the Áras.

On reaching the Áras each person was called individually and introduced to President and Mrs. Higgins. We presented a beautiful hamper of Knockdrinna Cheese to the President and his wife. This hamper was kindly donated by Helen Finnegan of Knockdrinna Cheese, Stoneyford.

One of our party was sporting a knitted Kilkenny Cat brooch and much to our surprise Sabina was able to recite the Limerick

There once were two cats of Kilkenny

Each thought there was one cat too many

So they fought and they fit

And they scratched and they bit

Till (excepting their nails

And the tips of their tails)

Instead of two cats there weren’t any!

Having met everyone individually the President and his wife kindly stood in for a photo with the group. We were then treated to afternoon tea which was served in one of the beautiful reception rooms. This was indeed an occasion to be savoured.

President Higgins gave an inspiring speech referring to 1916 and the upcoming centenary commemorations.

It was a most enjoyable afternoon, one to remember.

Stoneyford Active Retirement Group is indeed active and the next trip will be to Russborough House on the 12th April. New members are always welcome.
