After weeks of behind the scenes preparation the 6th Annual Stonyford 10k Challenge kicked off on Saturday evening when a steady flow of eager runners came to the local community hall to enter the race and collect their numbers.. Outside the hall the finish line gantry was erected and the scene was set.

Sunday morning the sun shone, what more could the runners ask for, the post race sandwiches were made and the mountains of cakes and buns were in place inside the hall, As over 200 runners and 50 walkers toed the line.

At 12 noon sharp a BANG started the race (the race is started with a shot gun) the leading men were quick to the fore as they headed up through the village in the direction of the school. The leading lady Adele Walsh (st Senans ac) wasn’t far behind and quickly dominated the ladies race, with a great gun to tape victory. The men’s race was a much closer affair with three men in contention for a long way. In the final few kilometres

Noel Murphy from Waterford AC pulled away for victory in a great time of 33.57. This left Cormac Buggy (Gowran ac) and David Mcpherson (KCH) fighting out for second place, with Buggy prevailing. Donna Dowling from Chapelview in Stoneyford was second lady home in a new personal best of 39.58. closely followed by Kate Nolan in third in 40.28.

The success of the Stoneyford 10k Challenge is due to the work of a small committee and the help of the Parents Association, The army of volunteer marshals , both old and the young, with the local kids helping at the water stops. The order of malta and Gardai were also in attendance on the day to ensure the runners health and safety.

The prizes were handed out to the winners by Padhraic Moran Principal of the School who also was the 60 minute pacer on the day. A big thanks you to all the race sponsors who without their financial backing the race could not be the success it is today.
